The 3rd Minimize Minute

Challenge: Project 333

Here’s a challenge for you in 2018! Join me each week as we take on a new task to help simplify our lives and minimizing our households.

Challenge #3: Project 333 – The concept originated with a lady named Courtney Carver who gave herself a fashion minimalism challenge to wear only 33 items for three months – hence 333. The simplification brought her more peace, time and enjoyment.

How’d it go: Going into this week’s challenge, I listened to a couple podcasts, read a few blogs and came away with two key pointers. 1) It doesn’t have to be 33 items for 3 months. It can be any number of my choosing, or not. I actually didn’t choose a number. I just got to work clearing my closet of everything I didn’t love. And, 2) I didn’t force myself to get rid of everything. The task took an entire evening, and I ended up with one box to discard, plus four boxes to store. By boxing most of it up and putting it aside yet keeping it accessible, the whole exercise felt easy and not the least bit painful. I knew that if I felt a yearning for a particular item, I could find it later on. My hope, of course, is that after not having to wade through these extra clothing items for a few months, I’ll be much more comfortable getting rid of them completely. My closet and dresser are neat and manageable, and I’m wearing what I normally wear. Courtney included accessories, shoes and cold weather gear in her 33 items, but not work-out wear. I haven’t gotten to shoes and accessories yet, though I will, and I actually need to purchase a few more work-out items right now. In the end, her experiment was a success and she learned to live much more simply when it came to fashion. She wrote that no one noticed she wore less of a variety and that she actually received more compliments. For me, even without sticking strictly to 33 items, everything I wear is much more organized, I can grab anything and I know it’ll work for me, plus there’s somehow less laundry to do.
