The Pitch

The column got started with a simple ask. I’ve never been good at asking for what I want, but each time I do, I learn more and more about myself and the goodness of the world.

To Warroad Pioneer Editor,

Hi Koren,

I’ve wanted to talk to you for some time about the possibility of writing a regular column. It’s a long-held wish for personal reasons and now also for community reasons. I tend towards the philosophical in my writing, i.e., finding beauty in the small things, but I also want to have a regular forum to talk about trail and ice conditions, snow, fishing (but not in any official sporting capacity), etc., things that are important to the people who visit the Angle and our business owners. I am not a business owner (though my grandparents are) and I’ll do my best not to play any kind of favorites.  (Perhaps these two goals don’t mix. We might have to feel that out as there is definitive Angle news to contribute.)

I’ve penned an intro column, attached. It’s a lofty beginning but that’s where my mind was at the time. If you’re open to this sort of contribution, perhaps from time to time I could submit photos as well.

If not this idea, perhaps there is something different I could contribute. J I just want to be involved.

Thank you for reading,

-Kellie

Hi Kellie,

Both Rebecca and I read your article and we think that it would be a great addition to the Pioneer. I especially like that we bring our readers a Northwest Angle perspective. For starters, we suggest having an article every other week. What do you think?

Well, I’m thrilled, of course! Thank you. I’ll do my best!

Every other week sounds perfect and if you have feedback or ideas about tone, content, headline, etc., I’m quite open to both.

What is the deadline you’d like me to meet?

May I also post it online in a blog format once you’ve published? I envision topics down the road that invite conversation and it’d be most useful to me and hopefully a few readers if there were a forum to engage.

 Thanks again! I’m very excited.

 Best,

-Kellie

Hi Kellie,

I’d like your articles by noon on Thursdays; we go to print on Mondays and we begin putting the paper together on Fridays. The paper is on newsstands on Tuesday afternoons.

You can post the article online after it’s been published; ideally, no sooner than Friday of the week it appears in the Pioneer. In addition, when you post it online, it’s helpful to your readers (and us) that you indicate was published in the XXX issue of the Warroad Pioneer. For example: This article originally appeared in the May 5, 2015, issue of the Warroad Pioneer.

Did you want me to start with the article you sent me?

I’ll also need a head shot of you so that we can create a personalized byline.

Thanks!

OK! I’ll get you a head shot and an updated version of that first draft by next Thursday.

Thank you.
